The Salon Show I set up at Chelsea College of the London Institute with the installation assistance of the Laura Ashley corporation. It had such impact as a space that since then I have always worked to make a site specific installation for my work, to create an architectural space conducive to the ideas in the paintings, whether the work is seen from a plush silk car[et or a wet street curb. In this case, the room was barren at the end of a long barren hallway, typical of an aging art college in a space that used to be the men's shower room, but this added to the impact of the over-the-top space on the other side of the dirty door. I dressed in an evening gown as a welcoming hostess having conversations as though it was a performance piece, hung a crystal chandelier, draped fabric down the walls and set up the work on boards hung on chain in the old salon-style, painted the floor, lay down Persian rugs and tasseled pillows, scattered around Country Life and Playboy on the fat dark leather wingback chairs and wrought iron coffee table, there was Sinatra singing "Yellow Daze", and every day reclining in the experience for two weeks the room was packed.
